唐代志人笔记小说，分为五部分：卷一宫部为君，记帝王及后妃生活；卷二、卷三商部为臣，记公卿琐事；卷四角部为人，记未仕平民故事；卷五征部为事，多记典故，并附谐戏；卷六羽部为物，记见闻杂事。
作者是唐德宗时宰相赵儒的侄孙，多识朝廷典故，所记多为第一手材料。《四库全书总目》称其书"虽体近小说，而往往足与史传相参"。书中故事篇幅虽短，但言约旨远，耐人咀嚼。
